There are many types of quail. At times quail eggs are eaten, many cultures eat quail meat. There are several types of quail that are native to Europe and several that are native to North America. In the state of Washington it is not legal to own domestic quail, but rare breeds of quail not indigenous to the Pacific Northwest are legal to own.

Button quail are a very small type of quail, hence the name button, to indicate their small stature. Coturnix quail are larger. Both types of quail can be bred for color and pattern. Selective breeding is necessary to achieve this.
